What is a sensible amount of carbs to consume on a low to moderate carbohydrate diet ?

Charmaine asked:

I don’t agree with the drastically low carb diets such as Atkins, I do like to include low gi diet fruits and non-starchy vegetables.. I want to lose weight sensibly so it will stay off ! I only need to lose 10 pounds. I am very active so need to be realistic here !
I am talking about grams of carbohydrate NOT calories !

A 1000 calorie a day diet seems to be the recommended minimum.

Don’t cut carbs! Your brain needs carbohydrates to function. Your brain takes the glucose and basically feeds off of it! I think you should eat more fruits and veggies and drink lots of water instead!

Here is some information about low carb diets that you might be interested in.

Around 40-70 grams of carbs a day is moderate. 15-30 would be low. A slice of whole meal bread is 20 grams of carbs, cup of raw cauliflower is 5. you get the idea. If you are so active that the weight falls off too quickly, (saggy floppy tummy and other bits not a good look on anyone) up your carbs a bit more. fitday.com has a good tracker that you can use for a few days to make sure your diet is balanced.

I work out 5 times a week and eat a fairly low carb GI diet. I have a lot of protein and veg including hi energy things like beans, pulses, broccoli etc. I have a small portion of starchy carbs like potatoes or rice as part of a meal per day (a portion about the size of my fist), usually with lunch and no carbs after 7pm. I think the most important thing is to make sure you have a varied diet, eat plenty of greens and avoid things like caffein, sugar, salt and yeast.

Well the potato should be as big as your fist and your meat too. Maybe 1/4/half a cup of brown rice at any mealtime. Oats are good for losing weight too cause they stabalise blood sugar helping keep weight off and your metabolism in working order. Keep white carbs to a minimum and stick to wholefoods, you’re on the right track with the fruit and veg.
Diets are crap and don’t work, just eat sensibly and do some excercise and you won’t have a problem, healthy living is for life not a couple of months and then stopping. Well done for being active, eat every 2-3 hours small meals and your metabolism will speed up. Take your body fat measurement and see from there if you need to lose fat cause muscle weighs more then fat and muscle is very important and keeps you lean as it burns fat just on its own.
